And still others-most notably hags-are traditional creatures that have been customized with unique habits and an entire subculture (Hag Law!). While some are taken from various mythologies and folklore, others are my own invention. The countless creatures that inhabit IMPYRIUM are a mix of old and new. Yes, it was important to construct its geography, economy, and political systems (sober, very-adult sounding stuff) but I also got to populate that world with monsters! And I’ve been obsessing over monsters since I was old enough to hold a crayon. Building IMPYRIUM’s world was a little like those frosted mini-wheats. When I was a kid, they used to broadcast commercials for a breakfast cereal whose whole grain half was for adults and the other-the frosted, sugary side-was for one’s inner kid.
